Jack M. Lewis earned
an associate degree from South Georgia College, undergraduate degrees
in mathematics and physics from Georgia Southern University, a master's
degree in research from Georgia Southern University, and an Ed.D.
in Educational Administration from Virginia Tech. He began his career
at Georgia Southern University, serving for seven years as assistant
registrar and director of admissions. He has served New River Community
College since 1974, and has provided leadership to instruction, student
services, distance learning, library and instruction support services,
financial services, and computing services.
Immediately
prior to his appointment as president in January 2002, Lewis was
Dean of the College at NRCC, serving as chief instruction and student
services officer, chief financial officer, and chief technology
officer.
In additional
to his responsibilities at NRCC, Lewis has served in many community
college leadership positions including Rotary International, area
chambers of commerce, and a wide variety of economic development
organizations and activities. In 1993, he was named Virginia Economic
Development Volunteer of the Year by the Southern Industrial Development
Council.
Dr. Lewis has
served the Virginia Community College System as a leader in the
development of several management information systems, such as the
Research and Assessment Data Support System (RADSS), the Productivity
Analysis System (PAS), and the Generalized Accounting and Reporting
System (GARS). He co-chairs the SIS Steering Committee and chairs
the MIS Stakeholders Group as part of the implementation of the
VCCS Technology Master Plan. He served as interim president of New
River Community College in 1991 and Piedmont Virginia Community
College in 1998.
Lewis is married
to Dr. Mary Ann Lewis, Associate Dean of the College of Human Resources
and Education at Virginia Tech. The Lewises have three sons and
four grandchildren. They reside in Blacksburg, Virginia.
