Marshall S. Miller,
a native of Bluefield, West Virginia, is president of Marshall Miller
& Associates, a geological and engineering firm that he founded
in 1976. After obtaining B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology from WVU,
he initiated his career in the Illinois oil and gas fields as a geophysical
engineer with Schlumberger Well Services. A five-year stint of research
then followed in Charlottesville, Virginia, as fuels geologist for
the Virginia Division of Mineral Resources. During this period, he
authored several pioneering studies in the area of geophysics, geology,
and mining, the most comprehensive of which was a 200-page book on
the coal fields of southwest Virginia, which stands today as a landmark
reference for mining and energy producers in that area. Following
a two-year interval as fuels geologist with Norfolk Southern's land
subsidiary, Pocahontas Land, Mr. Miller embarked on an independent
career, offering geological and geophysical services to the coal,
oil, and gas industries in the Central Appalachians.
Today, his company comprises the largest geological staff in the eastern
United States, serving the fuel-related industries. At the same time,
he continually pursued a diversification path that has resulted in
a multi-service engineering, geological, and geophysical operation
with a full staff of civil, mining, environmental, and petroleum engineers,
along with hydrological and computer specialists. The company now
numbers over 180 employees and provides consulting services on an
international basis, with mineral development ventures in China and
South America providing the majority of the company's international
focus.
The WVU graduate ('65 and '73) has authored over 25 professional publications
and was recognized as West Virginia Entrepreneur of the Year in 1993
by Inc. magazine, Ernst & Young, and Merrill Lynch. In recent
years, he received the Distinguished Alumni Professional Achievement
Award (WVU Geology Department) and the Distinguished Member Award
of the Society of Mining Engineers.
In addition to serving as a President of the WVU Foundation Board
and the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Advisory Board, he is
co-founder of the Bluefield Area Foundation. Mr. Miller also serves
on the following boards: PEMCO Corporation; Greater Bluefield Community
Center; Rosenbaum Family House, West Virginia University Hospitals;
and Eastern Mineral Law Foundation. He served as president of the
Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce in 1993 and is a multi-engine,
instrument-related pilot with over 20 years of experience. |
