The firm was founded in 1947 in Roanoke , Virginia , and continues its corporate operations in Roanoke .
Mr. Clinton joined HSMM in 1974 following four years of active duty as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. His initial assignment at HSMM was as a structural engineer in the Roanoke Office. During this period, Mr. Clinton developed an expertise in the design of blast-resistant structures. He was able to expand this expertise into a highly marketable service offering for the firm, leading to major contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense and private defense contractors. While Mr. Clinton is no longer involved in the design of blast resistant structures, the capability that he developed for HSMM lives on for the firm; today, this expertise provides HSMM with important contracts in the area of homeland security and anti-terrorism/force protection.
Showing an aptitude for sales and marketing, Mr. Clinton moved from the position of structural engineer to business development engineer in 1982, and soon thereafter to the position of production manager. In the late 1980s, he became manager of business development, and in 1993, vice president and chief development officer. He was promoted to his present position of executive vice president and chief operating officer in 1998. In this position, he directs all technical and business operations of the firm, overseeing the activities of a diverse staff of professional architects and engineers producing more than $50 million in annual revenues.
Throughout his career, Mr. Clinton has been active in professional and community affairs. He served in the West Virginia Air National Guard for more than 20 years, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He is the past president of the Virginia Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and past president of a number of PTA organizations. He has held a number of officer positions in local political party organizations.
Mr. Clinton has been a member of the Board of Supervisors of Botetourt County since 1999. He has been elected chairman of the board on three occasions, and serves in that position today.
Steve Clinton holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering from The Citadel, a master of science in civil engineering from the University of Virginia , and a master of business administration from Radford University . He and his wife Elaine have three grown children. |
